Helmut Debelius was born in Frankenberg on the Eder in 1947 and currently reside in Frankfurt, Germany. Following his indoctrination in the Mediterranean some 30 years ago, he has been diving and photographing the world's oceans on a regular basis. His keen interest in marine taxonomy led him to publish numerous popular science articles and become a freelance collaborator with the Senckenberg Museum in Frankfurt. In the course of his countless diving expeditions, he discovered a number of previously unknown marine species that scientists have since named in his honor, such as the angelfish Centropyge debelius and the scarlet cleaner shrimp Lysmata debelius.
